    ITINERARY
    Day 1
    Arrival in Santarem
    On the day of your arrival in Santarem, you can take advantage of the afternoon to visit the Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceicao, known as the Cathedral of Santarem. We also recommend you not to miss the beautiful sunset that you can enjoy from the viewpoint of the Puertas del Sol Gardens.

    From Santarem to Golega
    Today you will enjoy a very attractive stage. Following the course of the River Tajo and landscapes surrounded by vineyards and corn crops, you can visit traditional villages in the interior of Portugal, such as Vale de Figueira or Azinha.
    The stage ends in Golega, the land that saw the birth of the famous Jose Saramago. The town is located on the banks of the river and everything in it reminds you of the equestrian world, so if you are a horse lover, you will greatly enjoy this stage ending.

    Distance: 29 kilometres.

    Day 3
    From Golega to Tomar
    On this day you will leave behind the banks of the Tajo, but first you will have the opportunity to say goodbye to its bucolic landscape in Quinta da Cardiga, from where you can enjoy beautiful views.

    Then, the route enters a steeper environment, in which the landscape is dominated by the presence of eucalyptus forests. On the tour, you can visit some charming villages such as Vila Nova da Barquinha.

    The stage ends in Tomar, where you cannot miss the Templar Castle and the Convento de Cristo. The Sanctuary of Fatima is located 30 kilometres from Tomar, if you want to visit it, this is the time. Add an extra night to your trip and take a day trip to Portugal’s most important sanctuary.

    Day 4
    From Tomar to Alvaiazere
    From Tomar to Alvaiazere you will enjoy a number of fascinating kilometres, both for the landscape and the sights. At the beginning of the day you will walk along a bucolic path, on the banks of the River Nabo and surrounded by a lush forest. Afterwards, you will enter a stretch dominated by holm oaks and olive trees.
    On the tour you will find medieval bridges, such as Peniche, and stretches of Roman road, even passing by old public laundry rooms. To end this intense day, you can relax in Alvaiazere, a typical village of the Portuguese interior, with beautiful white homes and narrow streets.

    Day 5
    From Alvaiazere to Ansiao
    Much of the day today will be spent on the ancient Roman road, surrounded by a landscape of olive trees, holm oaks and eucalyptus trees. At this stage more than villages, what will come across your path will be great manors.

    The day ends in the beautiful and interesting town of Ansiao. In here you will find various places of interest, such as the monumental complex of Santiago da Guarda or the tile mosaic of the Reina Santa, one of the most appreciated monarchs in Portugal.

    Day 6
    From Ansiao a Condeixa A Nova
    The Roman road, along which you will continue today, the fields of vineyards and the small paths that run between stone walls, covered with moss, give this stage a special charm.

    However, it will not only be the environment and the landscape that will make the day special. The route crosses on these kilometres, places of enormous cultural interest such as the Roman village of Rabacal, where you can visit the impressive Castle of Germanelo, or the ruins of Conimbriga, an ancient Roman city.

    Day 7
    From Condeixa A Nova to Coimbra
    Your last day of walking will be a continuous up and down through the Portuguese countryside. On the tour, you will find places like Quinta de Sao Pedro or Quinta do Limoeiro.

    Before your arrival in Coimbra, where this route ends, you will have the opportunity to visit the Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Nova, where the remains of Elizabeth II, known as the Reina Santa, rest. Do not forget to visit its viewpoint because the panoramic view from there is spectacular.

    Day 8
    Coimbra
    Your last day on the Camino Portugues Central Route you can get to discover the lively city of Coimbra, former capital of Portugal. Some of its must-see visits are the University of Coimbra, one of the oldest in the world and declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, and the impressive Gothic cathedral of the city.

    However, in Coimbra you will find a multitude of plans, including a wide range of cultural activities and a lively party atmosphere. To be able to fully enjoy all that this city has to offer, if you want you can add an additional night in Coimbra.
