Camino de Santiago from Baiona

The stages that make up the section of the Camino de Santiago Baiona to Santiago are the last ones on the Camino Portugues Coastal Route. It is an ideal route for all those who wish to visit the Rias Baixas and the main Galician cities: Vigo, Pontevedra and Santiago de Compostela.

Much of the tour takes place along the estuary, so you will have numerous occasions to enjoy the tastiest seafood in the world and exquisite wines. In addition, this route offers you the opportunity to visit charming villages such as Redondela, Caldas de Reis, with its hot springs, or Padron, birthplace of the poet Rosalia de Castro and a town very famous for its peppers.

The Camino Portugues from Baiona ends at the Cathedral of Compostela, where the body of Santiago the Apostle rests. Once you have regained your breath, after the exciting and unforgettable moments that are lived when you arrive at the Plaza del Obradoiro, you can request the certificate that accredits your pilgrimage, known as the Compostela.

The Camino Portugues Coastal route from Baiona meets the two necessary requirements to apply for The Compostela: having done at least 100 kilometres on foot and finishing the tour in the Cathedral of Santiago.

    Day 1
    Arrival in Baiona
On the day of your arrival in the beautiful city of Baiona, you can make the most of it to visit its pleasant promenade, in which the Museo de la Carabela Pinta is located, or enjoy a quiet afternoon in front of the Atlantic Ocean.
It’s also worth reserving some time to enjoy the narrow, cobbled streets of Baiona’s town centre, as well as to enjoy the city’s excellent culinary culture.

    Accommodation: Overnight in Baiona.

    Day 2
    From Baiona to Vigo
On your first day of walking, you can choose between taking the tour following the official route or taking the path that runs along the coast. We recommend you to take the route that runs along the coast, as it is the only stage that you can face the sea.
However, both routes are beautiful and on them you can enjoy spectacular views of the Cies Islands and the impressive bay of Vigo. The tour ends in the city of Vigo, where you will find various sights and beautiful white sandy beaches on which to spend an endearing afternoon.

    Distance: 26 kilometres.

    Accommodation: Overnight in Vigo.

    Day 3
    From Vigo to Redondela
Today you will continue to skirt along the Vigo Estuary and enjoy excellent panoramic views of the area. Then you will enter the quiet path known as the Camiño da Traída das Augas.

The route ends in Redondela, where the Camino Portugues Coastal Route joins the Central route. You can take advantage of the afternoon to visit the beautiful San Simon Cove or enjoy the town of Redondela, where you will find various attractions.

    Distance: 15 kilometres.

    Accommodation: Overnight in Redondela.

    Day 4
    From Redondela to Pontevedra
Today you will continue to advance in the company of the estuary. On the tour, you will cross places of great interest such as Arcade, where you can visit the Castle of Soutomaior and enjoy a ration of the best oysters of Galicia.

The stage ends in Pontevedra, a city that has a beautiful town centre. We recommend visiting the Santuario de la Peregrina and the beautiful and lively squares in the city. In Pontevedra, you will also find an extended culture of “furanchos”, small private houses open to the public that offer excellent wine and traditional food.

    Distance: 20 kilometres.

    Accommodation: Overnight in Pontevedra.

    Day 5
From Pontevedra to Caldas de Reis
On this stage you will cross numerous villages and rural villages in the interior of Galicia, advancing through wooded areas with a great presence of pines, eucalyptus trees and chestnut trees. You will also have the opportunity to take a small detour to visit the waterfalls of the River Barosa.

The day ends in Caldas de Reis, a town famous for its hot springs, where you will find two spas where you can relax during the afternoon and a public fountain to which healing properties are attributed. The village also has a beautiful town centre and several Romanesque-style churches.

    Distance: 24 kilometres.

Accommodation: Overnight in Caldas de Reis.

    Day 6
From Caldas de Reis to Padron
Today you will enjoy several kilometres walking through bucolic wooded stretches, in the company of the river. At the end of the stage, in Pontecesures, you will leave the Galician province of Pontevedra to enter A Coruña.

The stage concludes in Padron, famous for having seen two magnificent writers born there, Camilo Jose Cela and Rosalia de Castro, and for its famous peppers, of which “some bite you and some do not”. The city also has a beautiful town centre and various attractions.

    Distance: 18 kilometres.

    Accommodation: Overnight in Padron.

    Day 7
From Padron to Santiago de Compostela
On the last day of the Camino Portugues from Baiona, you will pass through various places of interest. The first is Esclavitude, in which the visit to the sanctuary and the Holy Fountain is recommended.

The last kilometres of the day are full of unforgettable moments. You will have the first of them when you see the towers of the Cathedral of Santiago rise from Agro dos Monteiros, the highest point on the Camino Portugues, at 262 metres high. The other will be when you enter the Plaza del Obradoiro at the Cathedral of Santiago, with the sound of Galician bagpipes in the background.

    Distance: 24 kilometres.

Accommodation: Overnight in Santiago de Compostela.

Option: If you want to have a shorter stage, you can stay overnight in Parada de Francos. Please contact us for more information.

    Day 8
    Santiago de Compostela
The city of Santiago de Compostela has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. In addition to admiring the beauty and architectural richness of the Cathedral of Santiago and enjoying the lively squares that surround it, we recommend you to visit the Mercado de Abastos and the Alameda.

Another excellent plan is to wander through the small streets of the historic centre of Compostela, characterized by the blackish colour of its cobblestones. Also, don’t forget to discover the traditional taverns in the city and enjoy the exquisite Galician seafood.

To be able to visit Santiago de Compostela calmly, we recommend you to spend at least two nights in the city. Ask us if you are interested in adding an extra night to your trip or if you want us to manage reservations for your excursions and / or visits (Cies Islands, Finisterre, etc.)
