The Camino de Santiago from Ponferrada to Sarria is a route of six days and five nights, ideal for all those who want to have the experience of entering Galicia on foot.

This route departs from the town of Ponferrada in the province of León, where you will have the opportunity to visit one of the best preserved Templar castles. The tour continues through the Bierzo region, known for its wines and the stunning landscape of the Sil Valley.

Halfway through the route, your journey will enter a mountainous landscape, heading for the mountain pass of O Cebreiro, where watching the sunset and the sunrise is a luxury.

From there, you will start a descent that will take you to discover rural Galicia, ending your trip in Sarria, not without first having the opportunity to visit the impressive Monastery of Samos.

    ITINERARY
    Day 1
    Arrival in Ponferrada
    Upon arrival in Ponferrada, you cannot miss the opportunity to visit the Castillo de los Templarios and the Torre del Reloj, two of the main attractions within the city.
    If you have time and want to spend two nights in Ponferrada, do not hesitate to ask us. Therefore, you will have the opportunity to visit many other places of interest with which this city has, such as the Basilica de la Encina, Casa de los Escudos or its wide network of museums.

    Day 2
    From Ponferrada to Villafranca del Bierzo
    Today, after crossing the River Sil when leaving the city, you will enter the region of El Bierzo, nestled in the mountains. On your path you will see many small villages, such as Compostilla, Columbrians, Fuentes Nuevas, Camponaraya, Cacabelos and Pieros, where you will have the opportunity to taste the area’s traditional products (meat, sausages, cherries and wines).

    The stage ends in Villafranca del Bierzo, where you can enjoy a relaxing afternoon on the river promenade in the town or visiting some places of interest, such as the Church of Santiago and its Puerta del Perdón, which only opens during Holy Year, or the Convent of San Nicolás.

    Distance: 17 kilometres.

    Day 3
    From Villafranca del Bierzo to O Cebreiro
    On the second day of walking you will leave Castile and León, to enter Galicia. Today’s route is a constant climb, in total it faces a slope of 1,000 metres. However, various villages, as well as the magnificent views of the River Valcarce Valley, will make the effort worthwhile.

    The day concludes in O Cebreiro, a small village in the province of Lugo, shrouded in mystery. According to the locals, in one of the chapels of his church a great miracle occurred, we encourage you to find out about it during your stay.

    Distance: 28 kilometres.

    Accommodation: Overnight in O Cebreiro.

    Option: If you would like a shorter stage, then you can stay overnight in Herrerías. Please contact us for more information.

    Day 4
    From O Cebreiro to Triacastela
    Today you can enjoy a spectacular sunrise from the top of O Cebreiro, we recommend you to get up early so you don’t miss the show. Today’s kilometres are almost all in descent, through lands of Celtic castros and under the watchful eye of the “Rubias Gallegas” (a type of cow very common in Galicia).

    After the climb up to Alto do Poio, you will find a few more villages and finally Triacastela, where the environment invites you to stop for a quiet chat. During the afternoon, you can take the time to visit the mill of the town or the As Encrucilladas house.

    Distance: 19 kilometres.

    Day 5
    From Triacastela to Sarria
    On the last day of walking, you will find two possible routes: the San Xil variant and the Samos variant. They’re both pretty and both will take you to Sarria.

    The San Xil route is considered as the original one and runs through one of the most beautiful valleys in the entire Camino de Santiago Frances. However, the Samos route will allow you to visit the impressive Benedictine Monastery of Samos, on a tour of the valley of the River Ouribio.

    Distance: 21 kilometres.

    Accommodation: Overnight in Sarria.

    Day 7
    Sarria
    The trip ends in one of the places preferred by pilgrims to start the Camino de Santiago. In this village, you will find a lively atmosphere and a continuous stream of pilgrims, especially in Rúa Maior (Sarria’s main street).

    You can take advantage of the day to visit the Mirador de Sarria, located at the end of the town, the Castle of Sarria and the Church of Santa Mariña. If you want to relax in the town or discover all its surroundings, contact us to add one more night in Sarria to your trip.

    On the other hand, if you have time and feel like it, we encourage you to complete the last 100 kilometres on the Camino de Santiago. Ask us for information about the route that joins Sarria to Santiago de Compostela.
