Camino de Santiago from Roncesvalles

The Camino de Santiago from Roncesvalles is an ideal route for all those who want to enjoy the first kilometres on the Camino Frances, but without having to face the hard stage of Saint Jean Pied de Port, where the route officially begins.

The route is completed over a natural mountain environment, reaching its highest point in Alto del Perdón, where you can enjoy a spectacular panorama of the region. On your path there will be numerous medieval bridges, as well as castles and ancient churches.

In addition, the Camino Frances from Roncesvalles will allow you to visit one of the most famous cities in Spain, Pamplona, world famous for the San Fermin festival. You will also have the opportunity to discover picturesque towns such as Puente la Reina or Estella.

The route ends in Logroño, capital of the la Rioja wine region. Throughout the tour, you can enjoy a landscape characterized by the presence of vineyards and taste numerous wines from the region. The Bodegas Irache wine fountain, from which free wine emanates, 365 days a year, is a visit that you should not miss.

    ITINERARY
    Day 1
    Arrival in Roncesvalles
Surrounded by mountains and with an air of mystery, Roncesvalles is an ideal place to embark on the Camino de Santiago Frances. The village is small but very picturesque, full of stone houses and cobblestoned streets.

On the day of your arrival, we recommend that you come to visit the Church of the Real Colegiata de Santa Maria, the pilgrim’s door and the chapels of Santiago and the Holy Spirit.

    Accommodation: Overnight in Roncesvalles.

    Day 2
    From Roncesvalles to Zubiri
The first stage of the Camino de Santiago from Roncesvalles is especially beautiful. During the first few kilometres, you will cross a mysterious oak forest, known as the Robledal de las Brujas.

On the route, through a landscape dominated by the presence of beech and oak trees, you will reach two mountain passes. One is known as the Alto de Mezkiritz, at an altitude of 920 metres, and the other as Alto de Erro, at 800 metres.

Following the banks of the River Arga, you will reach the end of the stage in Zubiri, a village located in the Esteribar Valley. We advise you to take advantage of the afternoon to enjoy the bucolic environment surrounding el Puente de la Rabia.

    Distance: 20 kilometres.

    Accommodation: Overnight in Zubiri.

    Day 3
    From Zubiri to Pamplona
On this day, you can choose between following the original path of the Camino Frances or taking the quiet river bank on the River Arga to Pamplona. We recommend the second option.

The main feature of these kilometres on the Camino de Santiago from Roncesvalles are the numerous medieval bridges that you will have to cross in the route. The day ends in Pamplona, where you will find many places of interest, such as the Cathedral or the Plaza del Castillo, where one of the cafes frequented by the famous Ernest Hemingway is located.

In addition, it is also an excellent place to enjoy the gastronomy of the region. If you haven’t already, we suggest you try some Pacharán. To enjoy Pamplona to the fullest it takes at least two days, if you want to add an extra night to your tour, please contact us.

    Distance: 20 kilometres.

    Accommodation: Overnight in Pamplona.

    Day 4
From Pamplona to Puente la Reina
Today you will start the day by setting off to the Alto del Perdón. During the ascent and from the top, you will enjoy an excellent panorama over the entire valley and the city of Pamplona.

The descent from Alto del Perdón is made on stony terrain, but surrounded by a very pleasant environment. The day ends in Puente la Reina, a medieval village, dominated by the presence of a beautiful bridge that gives the town its name.

    Distance: 23 kilometres.

Accommodation: Overnight in Puente la Reina.

    Day 5
From Puente la Reina to Estella.
Today you will advance over undulating terrain, on which, little by little, vineyards will become present. By following small trails and crossing various rivers such as the Salado, Iranzu and Erga you can visit medieval towns, such as Cirauqui. You will also have the opportunity to complete a few kilometres following the Roman road.

The day ends in the walled town of Estella, where you can spend the afternoon visiting various churches and medieval palaces or the saltwater springs.

    Distance: 23 kilometres.

    Accommodation: Overnight in Estella.

    Day 6
    From Estella to Los Arcos
Today, shortly after leaving Estella, you will find the free wine fountain at Bodegas Irache, where you can start the day toasting to your good fortune. Afterwards, a walk awaits you surrounded by olive tree plantations and huge vineyards that announce the proximity of La Rioja.

The tour is made in a totally natural environment, with very few villages along the way. The day ends in another medieval villa, Los Arcos. We recommend you to walk its long streets in search of the Estanco and Castile portals.

    Distance: 21,5 kilometres.

    Accommodation: Overnight in Los Arcos.

    Day 7
    From Los Arcos to Logroño
On your last day of walking, you will leave Navarra and enter La Rioja. Wine crops will be increasingly present on the landscape.

During the day, you won’t find many locations on your path. However, before you reach Logroño, you can visit villages such as Sansol and Torres del Río, with strong Baroque architecture, or the old noble town of Viana.

    Distance: 27 kilometres.

    Accommodation: Overnight in Logroño.

    Day 8
    Logroño
Logroño is a beautiful city, where it is worth losing yourself around the streets of its old town. Some essential visits are the Gothic Cathedral of Santa Maria la Redonda, the church of San Bartolomé and the Paseo del Espolón.

The city, capital of La Rioja, is also an ideal place to discover Riojan gastronomy and wines. In streets such as Laurel, Mercado or San Juan you will find a wide culinary offer and many places specialized in tapas. The wineries also abound in Logroño, some of them are: Marqués de Murrieta, Campo Viejo or Marqués de Vargas.

If you want to discover all the gastronomy and wine culture of La Rioja, as well as enjoy the pleasant atmosphere that is found in Logroño, you can add an additional night to your trip. Please contact us for more information.

On the other hand, if you think that 8 days on the Camino de Santiago are not enough, do not hesitate to contact us so that we can add into your trip some of the stages along the stretch that joins Logroño and Burgos.
